Indie Filmmakers Are Re-Writing The Rules of Hollywood
If you haven't heard, the movie Obsession is shattering the Hollywood mold and all traditional expectations. The film only cost $750k to make and has already grossed a staggering $73M since May 15. Even more interesting, 75% of the film's audience is between ages 18-29. And they said young people don't go to the movies anymore. The film's director, Curry Barker, is just the latest in the YouTuber to A-list movie director pipeline, following the likes of Markiplier (Iron Lung), and Kane Parsons (A24's Backroom). Barker has already been offered 8-figures for his next film (which he hasn't even pitched yet).
In a moment where traditional media companies are spending less and avoiding risk, building your own audience via YouTube and other social media platforms is an excellent strategy to work outside the Hollywood system. We've seen media moguls like Issa Rae return to her online roots, launching several YouTube series and a wildly successful TikTok microdrama, Screentime. So what can we learn from all this? Write something small that you can afford to shoot and post online. Keep flexing your creative muscles. The entertainment industry is not dying, it's evolving, and those with a DIY spirit will survive.
